Loes
van Riel was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and moved to the United
States in 1966. She has lived in Charlottesville, Virginia since 1987.
Loes became a full time artist in 1988 after falling in love with
graphics and gold leaf's luminosity. She spent the next eleven years
specializing in jewelry surface design, studied papermaking and in
1999 decided to focus solely on mixed media collages. They hold for
her the excitement of new challenges and discoveries, of stretching
the possibilities with favorite ingredients and experimenting with
new ones.
Loes
has exhibited her work in craft shows such as the Smithsonian, Philadelphia
Museum and American Craft Council Shows as well as in numerous galleries.
She has demonstrated jewelry surface design at the Renwick Gallery
in Washington, D.C. and was commissioned to design commemorative brooches
for the Smithsonian Women's Committee.
Her work was featured in various magazines including "Ornament" and
"Niche" and books such as "The Art of Jewelry Making" by Alan Revere.
